ANATOMY AND YOGA
with Ellen Saltonstall

Meeting Fridays:
February 29, March 21 and April 25
Two sessions each day…11am to 1pm and 2pm to 4pm

Course fee: $250 for all 6 sessions, $175 for 4 sessions, $50 per session

Deepen your knowledge of the body and support your asana practice by looking inside!

This course will provide a familiarity with the bones, joints and muscles most relevant to yoga. We'll start with breathing and the spine, then look at the hips, knees and shoulders, and also cover the lower arms and hands, and the lower legs and the feet. In each segment an outline will be provided with basic anatomical information and yoga-related side notes. We'll look at the interrelationships between muscle groups involved in the movements and positions of yoga, in order to reduce risk of injury and practice with full effectiveness and ease.

All practice traditions and levels of experience are welcome.
Each 2-hour session can be attended separately.

Ellen Saltonstall began her practice of meditation in 1974, and her practice of Hatha Yoga in 1981. After a decade of study in the Iyengar Yoga method, she met John Friend , who trained and certified her to teach Anusara Yoga. Ellen’s early involvement in massage and dance set the groundwork for her ongoing passion for anatomy and the therapeutic applications of yoga. She has extensive experience working with issues such as menopause, fertility, lower back pain, and repetitive strain injuries. Ellen recently co-authored, with Dr. Loren Fishman two books on yoga which will be published in 2008 and 2009 by WW Norton: Yoga for Arthritis and Yoga for Osteoporosis. She is currently working on an anatomy book for Anusara Yoga practitioners with Martin and Jordan Kirk. Find out more about Ellen at www.mohiniyoga.com

RESTORATIVE YOGA PRACTICE
with Marlene Tendler

Saturday April 26th from 2:30-4:30 pm

Workshop fee $25....16 student limit

Join Marlene Tendler at The Yoga Shala for a weekend workshop dedicated to Restorative Yoga practice. Restorative Yoga is relaxing, rejuvenating and nourishing for the body, mind and spirit. It helps to relieve stress and fatigue as well as enhance overall well-being. Postures are usually reclining and always supported. By supporting the body with props, we relax and our being moves toward balance. Doing Restorative Yoga cultivates the habit of attention. We can learn how and where we hold tension and through the practice of conscious breathing, we can learn to relax and let go. As the body and mind relax, the nervous system sends and receives fewer messages, allowing quietness and deep relaxation.

Marlene is a Registered Yoga Teacher and has been teaching yoga since 2000 in Northern Fairfield County. Her teaching focuses on alignment principles and body awareness, using clear detailed instruction. Marlene is equally enthusiastic and skilled in teaching Restorative Yoga, which she combines with a guided mindfulness meditation. During the past several years, she has taught Restorative Yoga privately, and in the physical therapy department of a neurology clinic. She is experience in teaching clients with migraine headaches, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple scleroses, Parkinson’s disease, and autoimmune disease.

INDIAN VEGETARIAN COOKING – Basics
with Nandini Sharma

Saturday May 10th – 10 am to 1 pm.
Maximum 6 students

Personalized 3 hour lesson for 5 vegetarian dishes

$85 fee includes all recipes, ingredients and cooked foods for 2 – either stay for lunch or take home! The class is taught at Nandini’s home in Ridgefield, CT. Directions and menu will be provided upon registration.

Nandini Sharma was born and raised in a Punjabi home in Calcutta in Bengal, which is why her cooking is grounded in Northern (Punjabi) and Eastern (Bengali) traditions. She lived and worked in India until 2000 when she moved to the US working as a risk analyst in Corporate America.

Living in the US for the last 8 years has highlighted the sharp contrast for how food is purchased, stored and cooked here as compared to India. To feed the craving for “ her home food “ she routinely seeks out local & organic produce, Asian markets and Indian grocers. This enables her to carry on cooking in her traditional style i.e.” Shakahari” (“ those who eat plants/greens”) or vegetarian Indian food on a regular basis. Besides carrying on her family recipes she also has cooked for an Indian temple in upstate New York – often organizing & cooking meals for 60+ attendees. Nandini wants to share this skill with those who relish Indian food.

*a powerful new learning model that teaches you the key to sustained one-pointed focus & gives you complete comfort and enjoyment in a group learning environment
*the opening of your voice; your capacity to fully resonate and heal with sound
*an intimate understanding of the structure of sacred sound: the Sanskrit Alphabet; knowledge & practice of the sounds of the alphabet as bija mantras for chakra tuning
*how to read Sanskrit, and use the recognition of the original script to enhance your experience of sacred sound
