ASHTANGA VINYASA YOGA is the system of hatha yoga currently taught by scholar and yogi,Sri K Pattabhi Jois of Mysore, India. It is an ancient discipline which purifies the body, mind and spirit of the practitioner. This vinyasa practice is guided by the synchronization of breath and movement. Controlled breathing (ujayi),along with the practice of root locks (bandhas) and gazing point (dristi) generate an intense internal heat. This heat purifies the body, releasing unwanted toxins and encouraging the efficient function of the body’s systems. With disciplined and regular practice the potential of a steady mind and body are awakened in the practitioner.

ABOUT THE SHALA

THE YOGA SHALA is dedicated to teaching in the tradition of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. All of our classes are based on his method. Mysore-style practices, named after the city in south India where Pattabhi Jois and his family teach, are open sessions for all level students. Students practice at their own pace, learning the ashtanga sequence slowly, over time, with the guidance of the instructor. This method is an extremely beneficial way to learn yoga practice, as information is given to the student based on his or her level of experience. In addition to the Mysore practice, the shala also teaches many guided class each week. Primary series guided classes are intended for students with some practice experience , while mixed level classes are more exploratory and open to all level students. We recommend you come and try a number of different classes and get to know our teaching staff. Feel free to ask us about the ashtanga method, our current class schedule and what classes might be appropriate for you.

Throughout the year we invite nationally and internationally recognized teachers to come to The Yoga Shala for workshops and special events. Teachers who have visited the shala include: Tim Miller, Manju Jois, Beryl Bender Birch, Doug Swenson, David Newman, Manorama, John Campbell, David Oliver, Govinda Russell Kai, Greg Tebb, Denise Johnson and others. Hosting teachers with years of teaching and practice experience aids our entire community. We look forward to continuing our support of these wonderful teachers and to developing new relationships as we continue to open the shala doors to other fine guest teachers.

It is our intention, as teachers and students, to support the ashtanga community in CT and New York through programs that bring us together, inspire practice and honor the teachings of Sri K Pattabhi Jois.

May the merits of our practice be to the benefit of all living beings.

Om Shanti Shanti Shanti
